At Dekalog, we believe that loving your pet also means respecting its physiology. Hydration is one of the silent pillars of health. Often underestimated, it is nevertheless essential for cellular balance, skin vitality, and the overall well-being of your four-legged companion.

Why hydration is vital

Water is much more than a necessity: it is the engine of animal metabolism . It regulates body temperature, facilitates digestion, ensures the transport of nutrients, and eliminates waste. But it must also be properly absorbed and distributed throughout the body.

Hydrate your pet from the inside out

Fresh, clean water should always be available. But that's only the first step.

The effectiveness of hydration also depends on electrolyte balance , that is, the body's ability to draw water into the cells. This phenomenon relies on the osmotic power of certain substances such as sodium, potassium, and chloride.

💡 Our advice :

  • Opt for a moist diet rich in natural electrolytes.
  • Incorporate, according to veterinary recommendations, nutritional supplements based on electrolytes or amino acids to enhance cellular absorption.

Hydrate your pet from the outside

Your pet's skin is a fully-fledged organ, and water plays a fundamental role in it . It is more concentrated in the deeper layers of the epidermis (up to 70%) and decreases as you get closer to the surface.

A lack of hydration leads to a loss of suppleness and shine, and can weaken the skin against external aggressions.

How to preserve skin hydration?

Good external hydration is based on 4 principles :

  1. Bring water to the skin
  2. Fix this water in the deep layers
  3. Control its spread
  4. Limit its evaporation

This involves specific formulations in veterinary dermato-cosmetology:

  • Humectants (such as glycerin or fruit acids) to attract water
  • Hydrophilic film-forming agents (hyaluronic acid, collagen, chitosan) to smooth the skin and retain water
  • Hydrophobic film-forming agents (petroleum jelly, waxes) to create a protective barrier
  • Biomimetic lipids (fatty acids, ceramides) to restore the skin barrier
